The fifth chapter of the <em>Sa\u1e45g\u012bta-ratn\u0101kara<\/em> deals with a general analysis of all possible rhythms (<em>t\u0101las<\/em>) which can be obtained by combining a set of basic rhythmic components known as <em>t\u0101l\u0101\u1e45gas<\/em>. Here, \u015a\u0101r\u1e45gadeva describes the construction of the <em>sa\u1e43yoga<\/em>&#8211;<em>meru<\/em> (Table of Combinations), a tool that tabulates the total number of possible <em>t\u0101las<\/em> of a given duration which are obtained by combining elements of different subsets of <em>t\u0101l\u0101\u1e45gas<\/em>.
