To introduce students to the socio-political and historic context in which Sociology/Social Anthropology emerged in India as a disciplinary perspective.
To introduce students to diverse theoretical as well as methodological frameworks used in the study of Indian society.
To introduce students to the study of Sociological studies on caste and religion in India; both historical as well as contemporary.
Students become familiar with the intellectual and the colonial context of the study of Indian society
Student will be able to understand how knowledge on social phenomenon is highly contested and produced by competing theoretical as well as methodological foundations.
Students will become familiar with key sociological studies on Indian society, especially caste and religion
