Professional Ethics for Higher Education Faculties: Roles and Responsibilities of Teachers

Date: 29th – 30th August, 2015
Venue: Department of Humanities & Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai-600036, Tamil Nadu, India

Concept Note:

Three terms are invariably associated with the notion of ‘teacher’. To put it symbolically, X teaches Y to Z. The symbol X, Y, and Z stands respectively for ‘teacher’, ‘teaching materials’ and ‘target audience’. Are these components define teachers’ professionalism behaviour? To put it straight, is ‘teaching’ a professional activity? Society attests whether an occupation is to be treated as profession or not? Does society acclaim ‘teaching’ a profession? Is teaching an art or skill? Are teachers born or made? These questions are need to be examined from the present situation of higher education in India. It is so because teachers are being punished by courts for their inappropriate and social misbehavior (Barrett et al., 2012, 890). Had they known their roles and responsibilities in relation to the code of ethics of teachers, probably they would have refrained from doing unethical and unprofessional actions. As a result, the teacher community as such would earn prestige and command respect from the society. Teachers’ code of ethics prescribed by the UGC and AICTE are not known and clear to many teachers for various reasons. Thus, the action they render in their day–to-day activities may not conform to the teachers’ code of ethics and invariably have professional repercussions. In this context, this seminar is organized to discuss and examine the issues related to the following topics, but not limited to:

  • Curriculum design and ethical issues of Higher Education (HE)
  • Ethical issues involved in instructional design of a course
  • Professionalism in assessment and evaluation in HE
  • Conflicting roles and commitment of teachers in HE
  • Conflict of interests among teachers in HE
  • Role of teacher to impart quality in HE
  • Institution building, institutional administrative roles, ethical issues in HE
  • Teachers training in HE
  • Modifications of the UGC and AICTE Teachers’ Code of Ethics, if any
  • Usage of ICTs in HE: Uses and abuses of social networking sites
  • Societal expectations from a teacher
  • Role of a teacher in HE setting
  • Ethics in research work
  • Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system, practice of professionalism
  • Equity and gender sensitivity in HE
